NMC Announces Property Tax Exemption For Ex-Servicemen & Martyrs' Families

In what could be deemed as a good news for former servicemen and families of martyrs from the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), police service, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and fire brigade, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced clear exemption from property tax for them.

According to the recent notification on property tax received from the NMC, the ex-servicemen and families of martyrs will totally exempted from property tax demand from the current fiscal once they have filed an application and submitted required documents.

In a press conference held on June 10, Mayor Praveen Datke, leader of the ruling party Dayashankar Tiwari and chairman of tax consultative committee Girish Deshmukh made this announcement.  

According to Deshmukh, the NMC general body passed a resolution on May 30, 2012, to give exemption. The notification regarding the same was issued by the state government on April 7, 2016 and announced exemption to medal winning defense personnel and dependents of martyrs.

To ensure that the process is smooth for those to be exempted a special camp in association with All India Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association will be organised on June 25 and 26 at Raghuji Nagar.

Over 5, 500 people are likely to be benefited from the policy, added Deshmukh.

Exemption will not be given if:

• The widow of the ex-serviceman remarries
• The exemption is asked for commercial properties or for properties those are on rent
• Those seeking exemption do not have properties registered in their name

Assistant commissioners all 10 zones of NMC will be authorised to verify applications and documents. This will be followed by a final approval for exemption. However, according to Datke, if the exemption puts too much pressure on other taxpayers, the the government might take a step back.

The process of distribution of property tax demand notes has been delayed for long as the process of manual payment was being replaced by an online method.
