Ahmedabad Corporation Tightens Waste Management Rules

November 28, 2018   |   Surbhi Gupta

Starting December 3, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will not collect waste that is not segregated at source by the housing societies or individual homes. The door-to-door collection vehicle will be monitored by the corporation to ensure the rule is implemented. The AMC is also planning to penalise housing societies that do not comply with the order. The order is in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, which state that every generator must segregate waste into degradable and non-degradable, before handing it over to civic bodies.

The Ahmedabad corporation is also planning to hold campaigns for awareness and reach out to households and housing societies in this regard. Earlier, in September, the corporation had introduced user charges for solid waste collection which is over and above garbage collection charge. The user charges of Rs 1 per day for residential units and Rs 2 per day for a commercial unit is added into property tax which will ensure an additional revenue of Rs 116 crore to the corporation.

Recently, the Pune Municipal Corporation also issued a public notice stating that citizens must hand over only segregated garbage to the collectors and anybody found violating the provisions of the rules will be charged a penalty. A similar mandate was given for citizens in Mysuru.
