Tips To 'Childproof' Your Home

October 10, 2013   |   Proptiger

A “childproof home”, as some call it, becomes essential when you have toddlers in your home.

No matter how safe you think your home is, it may be open to unexpected hazards with little children exploring it. Hence, it is important to secure your home in such a manner that items of everyday use do not pose a danger for babies.

So here we bring to you a range of childproofing tips for your home, which can go a long way in ensuring that the toddlers in your home stay safe while you are not around.

The first and most important babyproofing tip for your home is to keep away from the reach of children all choking hazards that can cause suffocation. Areas to look out for include polythene bags, large soft toys, cords and wires and even gaps formed between two mattresses on the bed. Also keep a watch on any food which may pose a choking hazard when unexpectedly swallowed; some of these include candies, small fruits like strawberries, grapes and snacks like popcorn.

Another major threat that exists in homes with toddlers is that of open sockets, and they are very vulnerable to such items. It therefore becomes vital to install covered sockets, especially for electrical points which are installed close to the floor level.

Keep all medicines, drugs and poisonous substances away from the reach of children. Store such items on higher shelves, so as to make them inaccessible to children.

Make sure that all hazardous materials are kept inside closed cabinets and locked. This will ensure that the curiosity of toddlers doesn’t land them in unwanted situations.

Install childproofing gates near areas like staircases, fireplaces, kitchen areas and balconies. These gates will ensure optimum home security and prevent toddlers from entering areas vulnerable to danger.

Ensure that all electrical wires are concealed and electronic devices are kept at a safe distance from children’s play areas.

Another mandate for safe homes is to make sure that toddlers do not have access to any water body in the house, including bath tubs and pools. It is highly recommended to never let kids have access to such areas without strict supervision.

As complicated as it may seem at first, childproofing of homes is simple to execute. You just need to perceive your home as it would be seen by your young ones. Start looking at potential hazards as they would see it, and work accordingly to make your home safe for kids.
