#EarthDay: 5 Ways To Use Houseplants As Decorative

April 22 2016   |   Shweta Talwar

It can be difficult to have your own garden if you live in a small apartment. However, you can always have your favourite plants indoors to add to the beauty of your home along with ensuring fresh air. So, go ahead and buy some indoor greenery that can double up as decorative piece. The greenery is known to add colour, appeal and life to a room.

PropGuide lists five interesting ways in which you could use houseplants as decorative:

Instead of only placing houseplants in pots of different sizes in the corners of a room, use them creatively and put them in wall shelves. Choose the plants that need less sunlight and water. The wall-mounted décor is clean and minimal and can add the right amount of warmth to your room.

If you thought houseplants could be placed only in the living area or balcony, think again. There are many plants that work well in bathrooms, as they need more humidity. Also, besides their decorative appeal, some help purify the air. Aloe vera is one such plant that can be placed in the bathroom as it needs little sunlight and water. Bamboo, orchids, and snake plants are some other plants that can be placed in bathrooms.

Though kitchen gardens need larger space, you can also have a small kitchen garden in your very own kitchen. Plant some herbs in small pots and you can keep them near the kitchen window where they can get the required amount of sunlight. Also, you can hang baskets with such plants or put them on a shelf in a space between wall cupboards. These herbs will not only be useful in your cooking but their aroma will also spread fragrance in the kitchen.

Vertical plant arrangement

A vertical plant arrangement is a decorative in itself. Hang it in any part of your room and give it a new atmosphere altogether. You can hang different plants individually or in groups to make a beautiful landscape effect.

Terrarium

This is one of the most interesting ideas to combine your houseplants into a decorative arrangement. Make your own terrarium or a plant arrangement by picking your favourite indoor plants. You can mix, combine and add plants which you like; however, do not randomly mix plants that cannot endure the same conditions. For instance, choose plants with similar needs for sunlight or water.
