Have No Parking Space? You May Not Be Able To Register Your Vehicle In Ahmedabad

In order to control the parking nuisance, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to bring a new policy in action. If the policy is approved, residents will have to obtain a no-objection certificate (NoC) from the civic body before purchasing vehicles. To get this NOC, residents will have to prove that they have the required parking space at the building premises. Without the NOC, residents will not be able to register their vehicles with the district Regional Transport Office.

The AMC is not the first to propose such a move. To bring down the congestion on streets mainly caused due to abrupt parking by private car owners, several cities have already proposed such policies. Earlier, the civic body in Surat made it mandatory for residents to get an NOC before registering their cars. Once Surat gets an approval from the Gujarat government to launch the policy, it would become the first city in the state to have such a policy in place. The civic body in Surat has also identified some spots, where residents have to pay premium charges for parking. In national capital Delhi also, a similar policy could be launched after the state government gives its approval. Under to the policy, roadside parking will be chargeable for the residents along with peak hour rates, incremental road tax for the second car. Pune, too, is coming with its new parking policy to levy high parking charges for promoting usage of public transport in the city. Karnataka’s Urban Development Department’s new draft parking policy also seeks to levy a fee for on-street parking in residential areas. The draft parking policy extensively covers plans such as management of on-and off-street parking, parking on residential streets, parking for differently-abled persons, overnight parking of transport vehicles, parking in railways stations, parking at airport and Metro stations, parking of construction vehicles, etc.
