Raipur Authorities Demolish 70 Buildings; Pave Way For An Oxy-Zone

June 28, 2017   |   Surbhi Gupta

The world is becoming a concrete jungle, with cities clearing up the green belt to develop new buildings to accommodate more and more people. One city amid all the construction is bringing down buildings to create an eco-friendly environment. And, the city is Raipur, known as the seventh most polluted cities in the world. Authorities in Raipur are taking some brave steps and leaving no spare land available that can be converted into green land. Authorities have even demolished 70 government buildings in the main city to give way to the forest area. Here are few other interesting facts about Raipur's oxy-zone:

  • The total worth of the 18-acre land that would be converted into oxy-zone is Rs 1,000 crore.
  • This oxy-zone will be planned on the lines of Central Park in New York.
  • The land originally housed 70-government buildings which were in dilapidated condition. Out of 70, only four buildings have been retained that will be converted into a museum.
  • These damaged buildings were home to 80 families which have been rehabilitated to other location.
  • There will be no manicured gardens or lawns rather plenty of trees and plants that generate maximum oxygen. Banyan tree that produces maximum oxygen as compared to other plantation, will be planted at various sites to maintain the green balance in the city.
  • The oxy-zone will also have water bodies to recharge ground water level.
  • The project will be completed in the next 10 months.
  • The forest will be open to the public.
  • Apart from creating a dedicated space for promoting greenery in the city, Raipur district administration is reviving the lakes and the ponds. So far 28 lakes have been revived in the district that will replenish the rain water and recharge groundwater level. Apart from this, Roadsides, dividers, cremation ground and wherever land is available, the saplings are being planted as monsoon is approaching.

Though the government is doing a commendable job in letting off the revenue which could have been generated from this 18-acre land through commercial construction, local citizen awareness is equally essential to help Raipur gain its greenery back.
